乘雲而起，雲端運算(Cloud Computing)是繼網際網路(Internet)之後最重要的一次產業典範式轉移(Paradigm Shift)，它代表著另一個資訊世代的來臨，而且雲端運算也同時代表著全球科技業跨入下一波黃金十年的新契機。雲端運算的基本精神在以網路頻寬取代實體運算，透過虛擬化的技術，可以使得大量資料的儲存及即時運算Computational Analysis，在夠在運算能力有限的終端裝置上實現。在網路頻寬(Bandwidth)許可下，人人可根據需求購買即時運算(Computing)而非電腦(Computer)。因此，以虛擬化技術建構低耗能(Low Power)、高效能(High Performance)、高密度(High Density)及高延展(High Scalability)的強大資料運算中心(Datacenter)，來提供運算及儲存服務之市場，在可見的未來將會更趨於成熟。
面對雲端運算的典範移轉，台灣資訊產業在過去數十年，所累積的伺服器系統設計製造的經驗，將會在此領域扮演重要的角色，然而，使用者所需要的，並不只是運算的服務。未來「3C」的願景是：希望以「人本自動化服務」(Human Centric Automation)為核心理念，經由統合「雲端運算」、「網路連結」(Connectivity Technology)以及「終端系統」(Client Device)之產品及技術，提供整合方案以協助實現在任何時候，任何地點，都可讓所有使用者無間斷地使用的雲端服務。
微軟執行長Steve Ballmer日前造訪位居亞洲的雲端重鎮-台灣，在「運籌雲端．共創三『螢』」(Three Screens and a Cloud)的科技前瞻論壇中，揭示了未來微軟對於雲端運算的願景...將資訊與每個人日常生活中最常接觸到的三個螢幕（電腦、手機及電視或其它裝置）實現完美的無縫整合。何謂雲端運算（cloud computing）科技？工研院雲端運算中心11日表示，簡單說就是透過網際網路存取資料與使用服務。有了雲端科技，企業可以省去建購IT部門的費用，未來就像使用水、電等「公用事業」的概念，可按照使用量付費。
近來除了綠能產業，在台灣，高科技業最夯的名詞莫過於雲端運算，不過，到底什麼是雲端運算？相信一般人也是一頭霧水，不知所以然。其實所謂的「雲」就是網際網路，裡面有著伺服器與資料中心，只要能跟雲朵連上線，即使使用最陽春的手機或是電腦，民眾也能存取資料及使用服務，也不用擔心手機、筆電萬一不見，重要的資料就此毀於一旦。工研院雲端運算中心說：『原本叫做Data center（資料中心），從資料中心到把它變成一種Utility公共設備的觀念，就是集中化，變成一個的Utility(公用事業)。』
實際上，一般人的生活早就被這項科技所影響，舉例來說，使用知名搜索網站Google搜索某個名詞，短短不到1秒就出現數以萬計的相關網頁，這就是Computational analysis雲端科技的展現。未來只要雲端運算技術更加成熟，透過雲端運算中心，企業就能儲存重要資料，無需另外成立IT部門，可以替企業省下大筆營運成本。『Cost(成本)會降低，IT品質會更高，因為這些都是專業的人在整個Run data center(負責資料中心)或是雲端運算中心。』不過，一旦所有服務全面雲端化，可能引發個人隱私外洩的問題；中心坦言安全問題沒有完全的..只有相對的解決方案，但是雲端科技已經是現代生活無法避免的趨勢。
